William George Whitsell - Born 10/13/1826 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Died 1879 & Margaret (Marjorie) Frances Crews - married 4/24/1851

Joseph Crews is thought to have been born in Amherst County, Virginia and died December 1, 1801 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was the son of Joseph Crews and Agnes ? He married Mary Elder June 18, 1792 in Campbell County, Virginia. Mary Elder, born 1772 in Campbell County, Virginia died in 1828 in Henderson County, KY. She was the daughter of Joseph Elder and Mary Matthews.

Joseph Crews Jr. was born in Amherst County and died in 1801 in Oglethorpe County, GA.

Note on Joseph Crews (grandfather of Margaret Frances Crews, father of Williamson Crews)

   Joseph Crews is thought to have been born in Amherst County, Virginia and died December 1, 1801 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was the son of Joseph Crews and Agnes ? He married Mary Elder June 18, 1792 in Campbell  County, Virginia. Mary Elder, born 1772 in Campbell County, Virginia died in 1828 in Henderson County, KY. She was the daughter of Joseph Elder and Mary Matthews.

  

   Joseph Crews died leaving his wife with 4 small children. Her second marriage to William Crowley produced 7 more children. Georgia land lottery of 1806 allowed "all widows having a legitimate child or children under the age of 21 years, who have resided 12 months in this State, immediately preceding the passage of this act, shall be entitled to two draws". Thus, William Crowley, husband of Joseph Crews' widow, appeared as #69 in the Oglethorpe County list of eligible drawers, claiming 1 draw for the four orphans of Joseph Crews, deceased. Source: Oglethorpe Misc. Records, 158,725, list of eligible drawers lottery of 1806.

  

   A Joseph Crews is named as a son of Joseph Crews in his will of 1798 in  Amherst County, Virginia. Death date based on codicil of father's will of 1801 which says "reason to believe son Joseph is dead, his share to my daughter Nancy Franklin". Joseph Crews, Jr. is listed in the Amherst County,  Virginia tax list, Lexington Parish with one white male over 16, one horse owned, Joseph Crews, Jr. served in the Revolutionary War and received a pension. Proof of the war activity of Joseph Crews, Jr. may be found in his pension file, #W221. He took his family into Georgia for the Georgia Land Lottery in 1806, but died before the Lottery even began.

 

Joseph married unknown.   They had one child: Williamson.

Research Notes:

Note on Williamson Crews (father of Margaret Francis Crews). He was married to Margery Marks and they were the parents of Margaret Francis. Ancestors of Margery Marks. (See John Marks.)

 

Williamson married Margery Marks, daughter of John Marks II and Rachel Unknown.   They had two children: Margaret Francis and Nancy Jane.

 

Margaret Francis Crews

 

Margaret Francis Crews was born on 9 Jul 1835 and died on 23 Oct 1931 in Henderson County, KY, at age 96. 

 

Margaret married William George Whitsell (SEE: Descendants of George Whitsell, Sr. above), son of George Whitsell Jr. and Elizabeth Lester, on 24 Apr 1851.  William was born on 13 Oct 1826 in Oglethorpe County, GA and died in 1879, at age 53. They had ten children: John P., George Williamson, Monroe, James W., David W., Sallie A., Nancy K. (Belle), Martha, Henry Powell, and Andrew Jackson.

 

Nancy Jane Crews

 

Nancy Jane Crews was born in 1837 and died in 1926, at age 89. 

 

Nancy married Wiley D. Tapp.  Wiley was born on 28 Apr 1835.

Uriah (Ury) Marks

 

Uriah (Ury) Marks was born in 1752.

Uriah (Ury) Marks, born 1752; died 1830, Wythe County, Virginia. Uriah married Jenkin Williams; they had eleven children.

Mary Marks

 

Mary Marks was born in 1742 and died on 5 Dec 1811 in Loudoun County, VA, at age 69. 

 

Research Notes:

Mary Marks, born May 14, 1742; died December 5, 1811, Loudoun County, Virginia. Mary married Thomas Humphrey and they were the parents of twenty-one children, sixteen of whom lived to adulthood.

2-Martha (Patsy) Marks was born in 1745 and died on 1 Apr 1817, at age 72. 

 

Research Notes: Martha (Patsy) Marks, born 1745; died April 1, 1817. Martha married William Howell and they had four children.

Isaiah Marks

 

Isaiah Marks was born on 5 Apr 1755 and died on 20 Jan 1785 in Short Hill Cemetery, Loudoun County, VA, at age 29. 

 

Research Notes:

Isaiah Marks, born April 5, 1755; died January 20, 1785 - unmarried. He was a Captain in the 56th Regular Virginia Continental Line in the Revolutionary War. Isaiah Marks was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine; he also fought in battles at Monmouth, Stony Point, and Valley Forge. He is buried at Short Hill Cemetery in Loudoun County, Virginia.

 

In 1783, Isaiah Marks received four military grants of Kentucky land, each amounting to 1,000 acres. The land is described in the Master Index Virginia  Surveys and Grants 1774- 1791, p. 123; 1,000 acres on Highland Creek, 1,000 acres on the Tradewater River; 1,000 acres on the Ohio River and Highland Creek; and another 1,000 acres on the Tradewater River. This land is located in present-day Henderson and Union Counties of western Kentucky.

  

A portion of this original survey is still being farmed in Henderson County, Kentucky by descendants of Isaiah" brother John Marks II. Alexander Crooks, the great-great-great nephew of Isaiah Marks, is the present owner of Brandywine Farm, which is located near Corydon, Kentucky. The farm still boasts the original "ghost flower" or yucca plants that John Marks II brought here from Virginia and planted. Brandywine Farm was designated a Bicentennial Farm by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1992.

 

Thomas Marks

 

Thomas Marks was born in 1756 and died in 1832 in Henderson County, KY, at age 76. 

 

Research Notes:

Thomas Marks, born 1756; died 1832 Henderson County, Kentucky, was a Revolutionary War veteran. Thomas married twice. His first wife's name is unknown. (2nd) Keziah and they had six children.

John Marks II

 

John Marks II was born in 1757 and died in 1821 in Henderson County, at age 64. 

 

General Notes:

John Marks II, born 1757; died September 24, 1821, Henderson County, Kentucky, was a Revolutionary War veteran. John married Rachel and they had eleven children, one of them Margery Marks, who married Williamson Crews, also a Baptist minister, which is our direct line of descent.
