The Son Family and the Choctaw Nation

The Whitsell Family and the Choctaw Nation

Deanna Spears has this to share about Olivia(Ollie) Florence Son, my ggrandmother:

I was contacted with this information a while ago when I wrote you and did some additional researching myself. Here's what I got.

"First I will introduce myself. I am Joe Gough and am married to a wonderful person that has Indian relatives. Her grandmother was a Indian and her name was Olivia(Ollie) Florence Son. Her Death Certificate shows that Her father was Alexander Son. It does not show her mothers name but I believe it was Rosana Crowley.

"I am trying to find which tribe she belonged to. I am doing this for my granddaughter who is only eleven years old and looks more like a Indian than any other member of the family, and is proud of it. When she was born the doctor asked my daughter-in-law if there were any Indians in her family. She told him there were not on her side but her husband (My Son) had a g-grandmother that was Indian. He said that explained it because her daughter had Indian Blood. My family was English and light complected and sunburn easily. My granddaughter looks like she has a good tan and is very proud of it.

"Death certificate shows Alexander Son as being born in Webster Co. Ky.

I believe it was close to the Green River."

J.W.G. (Joe Gough)

Vicki Hobbs writes:

"Roe (short for Monroe) perhaps the Francis M. listed in the 1880 census--lived in Oklahoma, looked very Choctaw, held me on his lap during a Son-Harris Family Reunion held at Hopewell Church (near Barnett/Eldon, MO in 1954 or 1955. (note: Francis Monroe Son was the son of James Monroe Son and Eliza Jane Harris)."

Deanna goes on to say that "Her (Vicki Hobbs) posting was quite lengthy with a lot of census information on the family. I just found it interesting that this LIVE person remembers sitting on Monroe’s lap and that he LOOKED very indian."
